Senator Tomlinson Invites Students to be "Senator for a Day"

Senator Robert "Tommy" Tomlinson (R-6) will host his annual "Senator for a Day" event for high school students who want to learn more about government and the legislative process. The event will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the Bucks County Technical High School.

Senator Tomlinson holds the annual event to give high school students a chance to experience first-hand how government functions.

"Part of my responsibility as a legislator is to inform young people about voting and public policy issues," said Tomlinson. "It is my hope that these students will take away a great deal of knowledge about their state government and learn how legislators develop laws that affect them each day."

During the day, students play the role of senators and divide into committees to develop positions on current legislation.  Some topics that will be covered are cell phone prohibition while driving, graduation testing, schools’ right to search and increasing the legal driving age.  Students end the day by presenting their bills to the senate in a general session for a final vote.

This event has become a way for legislators to reach out to their younger constituents and provide those students with a learning opportunity that allows them to get involved in the legislative process, rather than just read about it.

"I always look forward to this event," said Senator Tomlinson. "It is encouraging to see students challenge their minds by debating such issues and learning how the legislative process works."
