New Law Banning Texting While Driving Goes Into Effect

A new law that bans texting while driving goes into effect March 8, according to Sen. Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks) who sponsored Senate Bill 314, Act 98.

The law imposes a ban on text messaging while driving for all drivers, regardless of age.  Text messaging includes sending, reading or writing with a cell phone or other wireless communication device. The law makes this a primary offense – meaning if the police suspect someone is texting while driving, they may be fined.

"When people are driving they should be concentrating on the road and other drivers, not texting," Tomlinson said. "It is very important that teens put down their cell phones because they are most at risk."

The age group with the greatest proportion of distracted drivers was the under-20 age group – 16 percent of all drivers younger than 20 involved in fatal crashes were reported to have been distracted while driving.
